If you've received a link to this article, you are currently logged into Google Chrome with a "Personal" account you created outside of the "Corporate" (Google Workspace) account that we manage for your organization.  We need you to move your data to your corporate account before personal accounts are disallowed altogether for security in the near future.

At a high level, you are going to do the following:

  1. Make sure that your browser is syncing properly with your personal account
  2. Disconnect your personal account from your browser
  3. Connect your corporate account (without replacing browser data) to your browser
  4. Sync the data in your browser with your corporate account
  5. (Optional) Delete your personal account altogether if it's no longer needed.

Step 1 - Make sure that your browser is syncing properly with your personal account

  1. Open Google Chrome and make sure you are logged in with your personal account and that your browser is synced - it should look similar to the image below. If Sync is not on, go ahead and turn it on.NOTE: If your personal account has the same email address as your workplace account, an additional prompt will appear when logging in (see below). Select Personal Google Account.

Step 2 - Disconnect your personal account and connect your corporate account (without removing browser data)

  1. Click your profile icon in the browser and click "Sync is on"

  2. This will open a new window, next to your name click "Turn Off"
  3. When you click "Turn off" a prompt will appear. Be sure that "Clear bookmarks, history, password, and more from this device" is Unchecked, and then click "Turn Off" again
  4. Your bookmarks and other data should still be in place! If your bookmarks disappeared, go back to step 1 and make sure nothing was done incorrectly.

Step 3 - Connect your corporate account (without replacing browser data)

  1. Sign into your browser as the corporate account - this account should be your primary email address along with your Network password.

NOTE 1: If you set up your personal account with the same email address as your workplace account, an additional prompt will appear when logging in (see image in Step 1). Select Google Workspace account.

NOTE 2: If your Network password does not work, and you haven't changed your password recently (in the last 90 days), you will probably need to reset this - see Changing your network password - Windows

Step 4 - Sync the data in your browser with your corporate account

  1. Once you're signed in, click your profile icon in the top right and click "Turn on sync..."
  2. A box will appear saying "[Personal Account] was previously using Chrome", select "This was me.", and click continue.
  3. Another prompt will appear, make sure "Keep local browsing data (bookmarks, passwords, history, etc.) is Checked, and click "Continue"
  4. At this point, all of your browser data has been copied and synced to your "Corporate" account

Step 5 - (Optional) Delete your personal account altogether if it's no longer needed.

This step is optional, but highly recommended unless this is an account you actually use (e.g. your personal GMail account where you receive email or that is linked to your phone). If your personal account is the same as your corporate account (shows up as "@gtempaccount.com"), please do yourself a favor and delete it for your own sanity. If you do not, it will almost certainly cause confusion down the road.

  1. Open an Incognito Window by clicking the three dots in the top right of the browser and clicking "New Incognito Window"
  2. Navigate to Google.com and click "Sign in" in the top right. NOTE: You will need to login through Google's web page for this step because Incognito mode will not let you login to Chrome
  3. Login with your "Personal" account (not your Corporate account!) NOTE: If your personal account has the same email address as your workplace account, you log in with that and an additional prompt will appear when logging in (see image in Step 1), and you will select Personal account.
  4. Once logged in, click on your profile icon in the top right (where "Sign In" used to be), then click on "Manage your Google Account"
  5. In the left menu select "Data & Privacy"
  6. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click "Delete your Google Account" under "More options". Follow the instructions to delete your Google Account.
