There are a large number of 2-factor authentication applications out there. You will also see these referred to as TOTP (time-based one-time password) applications, and they are interchangeable - they all use the same standard protocol.
Many cloud services will imply that you should use a particular service (commonly Google Authenticator), but this is not only unnecessary, but we do NOT recommend trying to keep track of multiple 2FA applications!
We currently recommend and support one of these two options:
- LastPass Authenticator (if you subscribe to the LastPass Enterprise Password Manager service)
- Authy (free application if you don't use LastPass)
Specifically, we do NOT recommend:
- Google Authenticator (because it does not back up to the cloud and/or sync automatically between devices)
- Microsoft Authenticator (because there is no desktop app - it can only be used on a mobile device)
There are a myriad of other apps that you may use if you wish - we've simply chosen to support LastPass and Authy.
