The LastPass service actually consists of 2 separate apps that you will install on your mobile device:

  • LastPass (the password vault)
  • LastPass Authenticator (much like Google Authenticator, a 2 factor authentication app that generates a code you can use for websites).

Steps to get set up:

  1. Install the LastPass Authenticator app on your cell phone (you may also install the LastPass app if you'd like to log into sites or access your passwords from your phone).
  2. Accept the emailed invitation on your computer, and establish a "Master Password".  It's very important that this password be unique, not something you use anywhere else.
  3. Once you get the "Master Password" established, it should require you to establish "Multifactor Authentication". That's the "LastPass Authenticator" app on your phone that generates a new 6-digit code every 30 second.  It will prompt you to download the app, then "pair" your phone by using your phone to scan a barcode that shows up on the screen.
  4. Once that is complete, you may log into the "LastPass" app on your phone as well if you opted for that in step #1.  Note that the first time you log in, you will have to switch over to the "LastPass Authenticator" app to retrieve the code to log into the "LastPass" app.

Once these are complete, you may use the LastPass Authenticator on any site that suggests that you use the "Google Authenticator".  A strong reason for doing this is that LastPass Authenticator can be set to back up your 2 factor codes to LastPass Vault.  To do this, go into the LastPass Authenticator app, and press the menu button, and select "Back Up To LastPass"
